Has anyone tried Japanese quince? how does the flavor compare to Chinese (which has almost a cranberry flavor to me - once cooked and sweetened)  and flowering quince (which is l like a lemon).

I've encountered a few recommendations of an ornamental  cultivar that
has been around for at least a few decades as useful for fruit: "Boule
de Feu (Fireball?)." The person who sticks in my mind is the late
Lawrence Hills of England writing 30-40 years ago. He was a very
experienced and knowledgeable horticulturist.
