I grew Jerusalem artichokes many years ago when I lived near the coast of Maine.  The patch petered out and died, possibly because they were being chewed up by something that left tunnels like carrot root maggots.  They aren't an absolute sure thing like every book seems to say.

Wherever you place them make sure that it is space you are willing to give up.  They will claim it as their own and slowly spread outward.  Mowing around the designated patch may control them somewhat.
