Not sure about poisonus or not, but both rhododendrons and mountain laurel
(Kalmia) have a dry capsular seed pod, not a fleshy fruit, so you wouldn't
want to eat them anyway.

There are lots of different shade tolerant shrubs out there depending on the
height and spread you want...
