I recall seeeing St Lawrence Nursery offering a silver maple which they claimed has a much higher sugar ration in its sap than traditional sugar maples.  St Lawrence specializes is very cold hardy stock as well.

I've also seen some sugar maple trees (I forget their name, started with a V maybe??) offered for sale up here and am wondering if anyone out there is growing them in a zone 3.

Sarah, sugar maple trees are quite common here, some quite old, All have survived plenty of minus 40's and a few minus 50's
