With all this discussion on the round-headed apple borer, I googled and found an image to satisfy my curiosity. Interesting --- but 6-8 inches!!!!!   Hope I don't meet one.

I had one borer in an apple once in SW WI, too. It was burroewed into the
graft union of a dwarf tree. The rootstock was either Bud 9 or P 22.  I
forget which.  I gouged out the grub and have not had another, in my apples
at least.  I've had a couple other trees that had borers in the twigs as
opposed to the base of the trunk. One was a Ptelea trifoliata, the hoptree.

Given the lack of major borer infestation here perhaps we are dealing with
another species of borer that only occasionally hits Malus.  Or perhaps in
my case, borer adults have difficulty finding my place amidst the
cornfields.
