Hello All,

I followed with interest the thread regarding apple bagging that
appeared about a year ago.

Hello All,

Did you know that apple bagging is not a new practice for protecting fruit?

Before the birth of Christ, Romans used earthenware vessels (two halfs) to protect pomagranites. The two halfs were placed over the fruit and sealed together with pitch/clay/straw.

This agricultural practice was written about by Columella, who died around 70AD.

It kept birds, and insects off the fruit. So apple bagging is just a rediscovery of ancient practice combined with modern materials.

Amazing what we forget.

Later,
Tom
