Hi all:

I live about 90 miles (150 km) West northwest of Michigan's grape region. In theory, I should be much more vulnerable to frost since I am farther inland. My recent low temps have been about 28F (-2C). So far, so good.

Recent cold, rainy weather has fruit tree in suspended state. No bee activity results in flowers hanging on until "last-call", hoping to get lucky. About a third of my pear trees are in full bloom. The rest are knocking on the door. Ditto for sweet cherries. Plums, apricots and peach are done. Grapes buds extended from zero to 3/4" (20mm). This is the first year in a long time when I got all the wood I collected grafted onto trees.

Other news:
7 of the 12 ewes lambed with 13 lambs bouncing around the pasture. Potatoes are planted. This year I am growing Michigan Purple

and MSE018-1. I grew MSE018-1 last year and was very pleased with it.

Are the morel mushrooms as confused as I am? We are both pretty much in a holding pattern.

Best regards from Eaton Rapids, Michigan: The new epicenter of Michigan's grape industry 8-)

Frost Wipes Out Grape Crop in Southwest Michigan

April 29, 2002 - A combination of high temperatures
followed by a killer frost may have all but wiped
out juice grapes in Southwest Michigan.
