Over the last 20 or so years I've planted M9/MM111 interstems a lot of
different ways
and have had the best success of planting the M9 stem will all but 1-2"
above the soil line.
And yes, the M9 will root but has no adverse effects. And its rooting does
have some benefit
as M9 has proven to be the most efficient at extracting calicum from soils
(my gut sense is that this is
what results in larger fruit from M9).
And the characteristics of MM111 (notably anchorage and drought
tolerance) is not lost by this method.
