The American Chestnut Cooperators' Foundation, headquartered out of the
Dept. of Plant Pathology and Weed Science, at Virginia Tech, has a
long-term breeding program in place, utilitizing ONLY American chestnut
germplasm, from surviving trees which have shown resistance to the blight,
or have become infected and 'healed' themselves. They make seedlings and
seednuts available to cooperators on a yearly basis. No guarantees of
blight resistance, but hopefully, at least some of the seedlings will
inherit the blight-resistance genes from their parents.
In addition to the breeding program, ACCF and cooperating plant scientists
at VA Tech are investigating hypovirulent strains of the blight fungus, etc.
