I suspect that craetagus is the original spelling (and I suspect the
ae is supposed to be that merged 'ae' you see in older (and often
British) writing (Encyclopedia used to have an 'ae' in it)).

So probably neither is actually 'wrong', just variant spellings, one
older than the other.

But I'm not speaking from actual knowledge here.
