Whatever the local health department or ag agent wants you to do-- generally
cremation in an attempt to destroy the virus.
Vaccination for rabies is cheap and effective. It is one of the basic
vaccinations on the AAEP list and all mounts should be vaccinated annually,
even in England. It is required that all Pennsylvania household dogs have a
valid rabies vaccination before they are licensed. Not having a shot means
no license ($300 fine), fine for no shot ($300), and the owner has to pay
for quarantine, in advance, and the post mortem exam.

In the Mid-Atlantic area rabies is so pervasive that many carriers are on
open season (skunks, foxes, feral dogs, coyotes, opossums, porcupines) and
no horse goes to a show without a rabies shot as well as a negative Coggins.
EIA is so rare in NJ that they have gone to a 2 year Coggins, but the rabies
shot must be annual. The local county health department no longer publishes
animal exposures, just human cases.

It makes no sense not to require vaccinations for communicable diseases in
your MSAR unit. Having the vet come out for 2 visits to do every shot in
the world and a Coggins costs me about $300 per year, and if the shots to
protect breed able mares from whatever my gelding may shed were deleted
about half that.
