All,

My below message was in no way intended to slight or offend those who devoted numerous hours towards the earlier development process of creating (draft) ASTM mounted searcher standards.  Sadly those earlier efforts and personal sacrifices devoted towards producing mounted searcher standards were not able to obtain a successful ASTM F-32.02 sub-committee (affirmative) ballot vote, which did not allow the draft documents to move forward into an ASTM Collaboration Area and in turn move to main F-32 committee balloting.  However, please take pride in knowing those efforts and sacrifices did serve as a cornerstone towards the development and creation of F2794-09.  Over the past several years there have been scores and scores of individuals who have contributed towards the advancement of MSAR standards and my personal thanks also goes out to each of them.

The down side to any ASTM International published standard is, it’s a propriety document and must be purchased.  Rather than go out and purchase individual copies, I recommend that MSAR teams purchase one copy for all their members, or better yet; recommend to their AHJ that they purchase a copy for all teams to reference within their response area.

Regards,

All,

Please know that ASTM International’s F-2794-09 “Standard Guide for Level 1 (Basic) Mounted Search and Rescue (MSAR) Responder” will be available for purchase within the next few weeks.  ASTM editors completed their review/modifications and sent the document for publishing yesterday (22 December 2009).  This is a major milestone for MSAR responders everywhere who desire professional standards for reference or adoption.  The standard is copyrighted by ASTM International, 100 Barr Harbor Drive, PO Box C700, West Conshohocken, PA 19428-2959, United States. Individual reprints (single or multiple copies) of this standard may be obtained by contacting ASTM at the above address or at 610-832-9585 (phone), 610-832-9555 (fax), or service@astm.org (e-mail); or through the ASTM website (www.astm.org).

The MSAR Responder draft document was introduced to ASTM International via the F-32.02 (Search and Rescue) work group WK12984 earlier this year.   T’mi was assigned as the WK-12984 TPOC of the document; Jorene and Irv served as (WK-12984) participants/members throughout the ASTM balloting and collaboration processes for this standard.   All together there were almost a dozen search and rescue professionals (from various applications) who were involved with the collaboration process.
