To add a little more to the tip of the iceberg :)

What about having the horse athletically fit. Fit horses are able to adapt to temperature changes much easier. ...Prevention of heat stress involves properly acclimating your horse to exercise...which takes time..Heat stress can occur even in very mild temperatures if the horse's body is still set to conserve heat instead of releasing heat.

Also, fitness is important because a fit horse develops a more efficient cardiovascular system, which results in more oxygen transport to the muscles and faster recovery heart rate. A fit horse will also sweat away fewer essential electrolytes and proteins.
