There are so many issues tied into the slaughter issue that it is not an easy one to debate. It IS guaranteed to illicit strong feelings though. First- slaughter in the US was very big business. Slaughter continues in Mexico and Canada- and is BIG business. It is much cheaper to not have to be humane which of course means a bigger profit margin. Never doubt for a moment that the lobbying and posturing that goes on is all about money. Most of the info circulated about slaughter issues are not facts but rumors started to support the position of those who make money by selling cheval to European human consumption. $$$ Second- I cannot condone slaughter as a means to dispose of faithful companions OR even unbroken horses. Horses are much more sentient than say- chickens. They reason and feel on a much higher level. Those who say slaughter is a good way to dispose of unwanted horses have never ever been to a kill auction, never looked into those equine eyes condemned to finish their lives of service there crowded into muddy pens, injured, sick, scared, never seen the terror of those loaded onto abattoir trucks- and have definitely never seen the absolute depravity that is the slaughter house itself. Because if you had you would ask yourself "How can we do that to a horse?"

Are there issues with unwanted horses? Yes. Is slaughter the solution? No. Fixing the 'machine' that allows indiscriminate breeding and creating humane and affordable ways to end a horses life are the solutions. Did you know the National Black Farmers Association offered to take EVERY unwanted horse? Funny how that didn't make the news and how many folks never heard of their offer.

And as to those rumors vs facts- Horsemeat has not been allowed in American sold dog food in many many decades. AND it is not found is much dog food anywhere. Why? It sells for a FORTUNE as human food which outprices it as pet food. My dogs eat a grain free diet. The price and availability of multiple brands of food haven't changed due to the slaughter ban.

As humans who use horses as tools and companions it behooves us to put our brains together to solve the problem of unwanted horses and affordable humane disposal instead of buying into their death for profit.
