Fescue is not recommended for feeding to pregnant mares.  It can cause abortions.

Since there are MSAR riders with mares, being aware of the fescue issues is certainly a concern if the mare is scheduled for breeding or already pregnant.

Fescue grown in the USA and Canada is often infected with a fungus that can be toxic to animals. If you’re trying to bring a mare into season for breeding, ingesting infected fescue can make it more difficult to bring the mare into heat much less retain an embryo. Pregnant mares might be impacted in several ways, as can the foal. Mare’s milk production might be reduced. Gestation may be notably longer. The foal may be abnormally large, causing difficulty during delivery. The placenta may detach during birth (stage 2) instead of waiting for stage 3 (release of the afterbirth), resulting in a “red bag” delivery where the newborn foal is often lost or compromised due to lack of oxygen. There is an increase of fetal or newborn death, and “dummy foal” survivors.
