GROUND SEARCH AND RESCUE (GSAR) TRAINING COURSE
Saturday, November 22, and Sunday, November, 23, 2008

A Mounted Search & Rescue (MSAR) team is being organized and trained for primary service in the Cook County area, and may also be deployed anywhere in the state upon request of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. The MSAR team will serve in the Emergency Services division of the Village of Melrose Park's Department of Public Safety, which conducts search & rescue (SAR) operations as well as train first responders in SAR operations. The head of the Department of Public Safety is Chief Philip C. Schwartz. The MSAR team leader is Lieutenant Ronald T. Vasser and Sergeant David Cooper is the MSAR team logistics and communications specialist. You can visit our website at www.mpps.us

A Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) training course will be conducted by the Melrose Park Dept. of Public Safety. This course is designed to offer an overview of SAR concepts and operations. It provides a broad overview of SAR fundamentals, such as the definition of search, the scope of SAR operations, resources, search techniques, basic land navigation, and search crew field operations. This course is intended for all emergency responders, including police, fire, emergency management, and parks & recreation personnel, who might be involved in a search incident during the normal course of their duties. Prior SAR training or experience is not required to successfully complete this course. This course meets applicable ASTM and NFPA standards.

All applicants for membership in the Melrose Park Mounted Search & Rescue team must complete the GSAR certification course as well as go through the Basic All Weather MSAR Training Course for certification. This is an opportunity for all of the new MSAR team candidates, who were MSAR certified on Oct. 18, 2008, to complete the second phase of their membership requirements. This GSAR course is also an opportunity for any new team member applicants to get started in our training program.

Any MSAR candidate who may have missed the last GSAR course can now make up this class and get certified. If you have already taken this GSAR training course and have a certificate, you are also invited to attend the class and help with the field exercise.

WHEN: Saturday, November 22, 2008  from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM
Sunday, November,  23, 2008  from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM

All sessions are required for certification

Our mission is to assemble a diverse group of professionals who will bring dedication, skill and personality to the MSAR team. If you know of any other riders that may be interested in joining and training with our MSAR team contact Lt. Vasser at 312-391-0077 or e-mail  rvasser@aol.com  for more information and include contact information, riding experience and a brief biography.

On behalf of Chief Philip C. Schwartz of the Melrose Park Department of Public Safety and myself, we would like to thank you for your interest and support.

Lt. Ronald T. Vasser
