You want to check out the msar-riders e-list at the cc above. There is a data base of organizations organized by state.

My name is Lori Stanton, I live in White Cloud, MI. I have an appaloosa mare (named Belle)that I have had for three years and we have lots of state land (the manistee national forest) in the area that I live.

I recently read the article that you wrote in the Perfect Horse, Sept 2007 issue. My mare is steady on the trail and alert but not "spooky", I watch her ears to see what she is looking at, crosses water alone or in a group, I have taken her into the White River and rode down the river w/ water up to her belly. She has a very good sense of direction, We have rode with friends that had dogs and they would dart in and around the horses. I would trust her to get me home, even if I was unconsciuos and laying over her back,( which I always do just before I get off ,to strecth my back), after a 10 or 20 mile ride. I have had friends tell me "she will take you anywhere" or that we have good communication. She trust me and I trust her.

Your article got me excited because that is something that I could do with my horse! My children are grown and moved out and I am a homemaker, my husband drives truck over the road. My problem is I don't know of any mounted volunteer search and rescue organizations,in my area, except for the mounted posse,( that I am not sure how to contact. )If you know of any in Mi, I would be willing to take classes as well as on-the-trail-training.  My horse and I have ridden alone and in a group of 20 to 150 riders. She has never gotten "hot" and will ride in the front, middle or back of the group.   Thank You so much for your help, and the work you do!  Hope to hear from you soon.
