Karen - Christopher Reeves had a C-3/C-4 spinal cord injury which severed the nerves in the upper part of his neck (not the back). He was paralyzed from the neck down and could not breath on his own and for the most part of his life after the accident, he needed breathing assistance from a machine.
You are correct that no hard hat (or riding helmet) would have prevented that type of injury, however, a helmet does protect the skull and reduces head and brain trauma. When brain trauma occurs from those types of an injury, many accident victims must remain on life support until the plus is pulled.

CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG! Chris Reeves, diagnosed from a fall from
horseback, suffered severe back injuries effecting his SPINE. No hard hat in
the world would have prevented that.

(He was parallized from the waist down...due to damages to his spine, not his brain.)
