The best place to start for information may be your state licensing agency.
For any First Aid, wilderness or other, many courses are quite good,
especially those Una mentioned, and no license is ever required. The
information is
designed for someone who does not get called constantly and who does not have
specialized equipment on and ambulance. Once you get to First Responder or
EMT,
wilderness or otherwise, a license is frequently required in order to
practice. (Some states start licensure at First Responder, others at EMT)
That means
continuing education, background checks, and refreshers (which are all a good
thing!) And in New Mexico, none of the specialty Wilderness Courses are
accepted for licensure except WMA. Your state may be very different. New
Mexico
is very tough in that respect due to the rural nature of the state and access
to people's houses and bodies that a responder may have on behalf of SAR,
Volunteer Fire Departments, etc. Just wouldn't want you to take a course and
then
find out later that your state does not recognize it. Susan Nestor, New
Mexico EMS.
