MSAR-Riders,

I hope those of you in the US enjoyed a relaxing and happy
Thanksgiving holiday. Mine involved two afternoons of nice
riding in sunny "hot" weather (50's F) after a week of sub-
freezing daytime high temperatures. Our regional drought
continues; the ground is bone dry, so warm weather made no
mud. The week before, I enjoyed an all-too-brief meeting
with Tomi Finkle of TROTSAR (Maryland and Virginia).

On SAR-L, Richard Guthrie brought to readers' attention an
updated Australian national SAR manual (from a US perspective,
skewed toward air searches), and the current Australian land
search operations manual. These two manuals make interesting
reading, for those of us involved in developing, running, or
training SAR units. Reading the tables of contents of both
manuals, and selected chapters, it appears that in Australia
there is very little diversity of SAR unit specialty, beyond
air (mostly national) vs land SAR (mostly state and local),
compared to the diversity that is so common in the US. Even
so, both manuals give much food for thought and are largely
relevant also to the US. Best of all, both manuals are free
and downloadable in PDFs, either entire or in parts.
