Hi All,

I am the coordinator of the Mounted Posse Horseback SAR team, out of Chillicothe, OH.  We have been in place since March of 2002, and things are going quite well for us.  We have obtained our Non Profit status in that time and have obtained many generous donations to purchase equipment.  We attend trainings each month, even in the cold weather,,,  several mock searches a year, first aid, CPR, crime scene preservation, etc. etc.  something different each month.    One piece of advice I could give on getting the basic first aid and CPR is to ask a local hospital if they would have any instructors who would volunteer there time to teach something like that.  We obtained our trainings for free this way thru the local VA hospital.  And since we also assist with searches for the VA, when veterans become missing, they were happy to assist us.  We have received assistance from other teams in the state on larger trainings, and several memebrs from our team are attending the National SAR training in NC in March.  (on foot, however).  Our team is really growing fast, and the community is very supportive.

We are in middle GA right around Macon. MSAR is apparantly a new thing
here. We actually got started when a couple of members of our horse club
lost horses, and the vision of expanding to help local law enforcement in
finding people came. WE looked for training but were unable to be taken
seriously until a local chaper of the American Red Cross offered us courses.
Then after the Bibb County Emergency Management Agency called us in for a
couple of searches for people, they offered us the Georgia Emergency
Management Agegency Training so we can fall under their liability. SAR is
usualy conducted by the local law enforcement or EMA and they bring in
outside units like scuba divers, dog SAR, etc. We have been trying to get
the word out to other counties as well as looking to outside training. I'll
check into what you suggested. One of the requirements for our team is to
be CPR and First Aid certified and be GEMA certified. The other is to be an
experienced trail rider and have a good trail horse. Most of the members
have TWH or quarter horses. I'm the hold-out with my little Arab, but he
has done just fine. Some of our members are trained in large animal rescue
and we've also been called to help in that arena at times. WE licensed radio
operators here but we are required to have a hand radio and cell phone. We
still the the beginning stages. (just organized this past summer).

managed in Georgia: is there a state-wide authority, as in New Mexico; or

training conferences, or by taking a course in Wilderness First Aid (several
national organizations offer these), or by going to a SAR conference in an
adjacent state.
