Discussion of teamwork got me thinking about potential for MSAR working with
other kinds of teams and providing advantageous services. The most obvious
is using the horses / mules for packing gear to/from a destination. That
gear might be to set up a spike camp, radio site, etc. The Stokes might be
used for mounted transport. Or you might transport a non-rider subject or
SAR person - injured or simply to get someone to X faster than hiking. That
got me thinking that some joint training where groundpounders receive some
very basic riding instruction might be a good idea. Another idea is to train
MSAR with Search Dogs, and get the livestock and dogs kinda comfortable with
the idea of the dog being packed on horseback - either balance over the
saddle or ride in a pack saddle pannier with appropriate weight balance on
the other side. We actually came real close to needing to pack a search dog
out of the wilderness a couple of years ago. And no, we didn't have any
specific training for that so it could have been an interesting experience!
;)

Any other ideas on MSAR cross training or specialized training to deal with
less common situations?
