For the second time in four weeks, an endangered Western lowland gorilla has given birth.

A zookeeper found the newborn about 6 a.m. Saturday, said spokeswoman Ana Bowie. The first baby gorilla born at the Denver Zoo in 30 years, named Tulivu, arrived May 2.

"With less than a dozen gorilla births a year in the United States, it's truly remarkable to have two births in such a short period of time," said Clayton Freiheit, Denver Zoo president.

The latest mom, a 26-year-old gorilla named JoRayK, is keeping her newborn pretty close to her chest, so zookeepers have been unable to determine the gender of the baby. With mother and child bonding so well, zookeepers don't wish to intervene.

Zoo officials said they don't know what to attribute the closely paired births to - other than coincidence.

Both fathers, as well as Tulivu's mom, were recent arrivals from the Los Angeles Zoo, which loaned them to Denver while the gorilla habitat there is being renovated.

"We don't know if it was the high altitude or what," Bowie said with a laugh.
