I've had the same problems - high iron in the water here, too. I do find
it's less of a problem with a coarser mix.

I know livestock producers who have eliminated algae growth in their water
troughs by adding a handful of marl to the tank - it hasn't occurred to me
until now to try something similar in the greenhouse. Maybe I will!

I get the same problem and I do have water high in iron and manganese and I
am using a light vermiculite covering. One problem I suspect is my supplier
gave me fine vermic instead of medium to coarse.
