Erik is exactly right in suggesting that you multiply by 2.5 instead of the .404 that I came up with.   I added 23 to 45 instead of subtracting and ended up doing the calculation essentially backward.  Pretty embarrassing for an old math teacher.  At least now you know there are two of us who agree on the 2.5 factor.

Thanks, Erik, for catching my mistake.

That number isn't right. Tangent(22) = 0.404, but that is opposite
over adjacent, which means that if you divide the greatest height by
0.404 then it will give you the length of the shadow, not multiplying
by 0.404.

Equivalently you could simply multiply the center height by 2.5 and
that gives you the approximate greatest length of the shadow. For my
own garden I would use 30 degrees, since only at the depth of winter
is it worse than that. If you are okay with that then you can instead
go with 1.75 times the height to get the length of the shadow along
the ground from that point. For at least 11 months out of the year
that would be good enough.
