Noted that you said  "inventers" and not "successful inventers"!
 
 
Time was when scrap dry ice was available, if I were lucky enough to find some during
 
growing season I would try dragging a peice of it over some galensoga in the manor of a
 
wick wiper with herbicide.
 
There thats invented, now lets see if it works!

 Makes me wonder if there were a way to spray/apply cold (instead of heat), controlled enough that it would kill the tender weeds, but not the most cold hardy crops.  Would help with August-planted fall crops.  Inventors?
