I did a search too Karen. All I found was reference to Spigarelli Kale. I have a volunteer at the Research Center who grew up in Italy and who is an Italian vegetable heirloom collector. I’ll see if he can shed some light on this vegetable.

From Joe I’ve learned that rapini is essentially a weed in southeastern Italy. You can collect it from the wild as food, and many folks do. But that family (Brassicaceae, including cabbage, kale, kohlrabi, broccoli, etc.) is incredibly elastic genetically, meaning that it cross-breeds easily and many forms can emerge from simple breeding efforts. It is not unusual for unique forms to be stabilized as a local product with unique characteristics. That may be what Spigarelli Kale is.

Link is from article in today's on-line NYTimes -- re high end chefs going out of their way to source great produce.  Mentions Italian vegetable spigarelli -- I never heard of, can't find with online search.  Anybody know what this is?
