we have tried the plastic or landscape cloth in our operation, it works minimally better than the paper or cardboard as far as controlling the weeds, guessing 10 percent more weeds using a paper product. However while turning the compost, the plastic breaks up and gets mixed with the compost and has to be removed. The paper products become part of the compost as time goes by.

A sheet of black plastic or landscape cloth under the pile, Erin?

I need to have a very basic compost pile for my farm to compost veggie
scrap waste, but the problem is I have these horribly invasive
rhizomes of grass (canary reed, quack, etc.) that invade the bottom of
the pile as it sits there, and then makes the finished compost
unusable. I was planning on doing a windrow type pile & turning it
with my bucket loader, layering spoiled hay in between vegetable layers.
Anyone have a creative idea for how to block out the grass from coming
up through the pile? I do not own the land, just lease it-- so a
concrete pad is out of the question for now. Other ideas?
Thanks!
