Nothing against Excel, but no need to buy even it if you don't already have it for some other reason. I use Open Office and for most things it is just as capable. There are a few shortcomings that I've run up against, but nothing dire, yet. I don't use it for super complicated things, though. There are also various other free spreadsheet programs, but they aren't all file compatible with Microsoft Office, which Open Office is pretty good at.
