I have been reading about the salad spinners on this list for a couple of
years now and still have not tried one. I think I even have one in a
cupboard in the pantry somewhere but have not taken the time to look yet. I
sell lettuce, but not in huge quantities like some of you folks. my average
picking for a day would be around 7 to 10 lbs/per day. That is all I can
pick, rinse and bag to put out to sell here. What I usually do is rinse it
so as to get most of the dirt if any and slugs if any out of it. Then I
shake the heads a little...and then lay them on clean towels on a tabel that
is in the sun, or at least a good breeze. Which we almost always have around
here ontop of the hill. Once they are partially dry, I bag them in a ziplock
type bag, heavier than a sandwich bag in thickness, and put them in my
cooler. I have ice packs on the bottom and then towels on top of those so
they don't touch the bags of lettuce and the lettuce lasts for days like
that. Although I almost always sell out from home...which is not the best
place for business...but I always sell out at market. For market though,
when it's hot, I keep the heads of lettuce free and in cold water in a bus
tub and then I bag the heads for the customers. They can be brutal when
picking through the tub for a head they want. So I volunteer myself to do
it! Most don't mind...and if they do, there are other stands to buy it from
is how I look at it. It would be like them pushing thier thumb into my baked
goods to make sure they are fresh. I don't allow such behavior at my booth!
But all other bahaviors are welcome!! LOL!
