I have been fighting nutsedge since I bought this land 17 years ago. I have
tried everything known to control it, you will never get rid of it just learn
to live with it.
The allopathic effects of rye and sudex are greatly over rated, I have used
this combination for years with little effect. Last week I mowed down a great
stand of 6 ft tall rye that was full of stunted nutsedge, after the rye was
cut the sedge grew fast. I disked the field and just reseeded to sudan grass
we call it Sudex around here. You must never let the sedge grow, constant
cultivation depletes the nuts, it can take 4-5 years of constant cultivation
to really eradicate it. I get 90% control with a combination of chemicals and
cultivation. Many herbicides are labeled for nutsedge, none will stop it
outright but are a great help. BTW forget what the textbooks say about
sedges, the folks who write the books were never farmers... Bob
