I did just a quick search and found this:

So basically, don't handle dead or killed rabbits with
bare hands or "poke them with a stick" and cook them
well-done. To be on the safe side, you might want to
check with your local wildlife conservation officer,
if nothing else to notify that you need to control
problem wildlife.

I'm located in west-central Kentucky, about an hour
southwest of Louisville.
