Absolutely. Coyotes are death on watermelons,
canteloupes and other melons. Sweet corn, too.

We put in 750 asparagus roots this spring for our future csa
shareholders. Of course weeding (isn't it always) a concern.

Recently I was looking around for hatching eggs for my grandson's
school project. Since I don't need more chickens I was thinking about
turkey or goose eggs. Upon reading about geese I realized that they
were used for weeding things like strawberries, but I didn't see any
mention of asparagus.

So, the question is, if my grandson hatched out a couple dozen goose
eggs, could I put the geese (when they are eventually returned to the
farm) out with the asparagus to attack the weeds? And would they
also attack the asparagus?

I don't know about watermelon, but I can tell you that the foxes that got
all our free range layers last year (some in our front yard!) also ate our
cantaloupes as they got ripe in the field, and when the ones in the high
tunnels started ripening, came through the windows to eat those too!

I dont know about asparagus but I know "someone" who planted garlic cloves in
the fall and the geese came by to pick up some remaining corn kernels and
started pulling out some of the garlic cloves. Maybe we should have labeled
them better? (HA)

In 1998 I heard a speaker from Indiana named Bruce McCallister at a small
farms conference talk about using turkey's in his asparagus. At the time,
he was putting 60 turkeys into his 1/4 acre asparagus patch after harvest
was over (mid June). They remained there until Thanksgiving. They
apparently eat both the weeds and asparagus beetles. He reported that they
ate the grass down in 2 weeks. Later in the season, they ate adult weeds
in an older asparagus patch. He commented that 20 turkeys would have
probable been enough for his 1/4 acre.

It is obviously VERY important to keep the birds (turkeys or geese) out of
the asparagus during harvest time to avoid contamination issues. One of
the obvious benefits of turkeys over geese is that there is a larger and
easier marketing potential for turkeys. Turkeys are also a seasonal animal
that does not have to be wintered over.

Bruce also talked about using chickens in a movable fencing system to clean
areas for strawberry planting and using his sheep and cow manure to create
a fertile area for garlic. I have long been very curious about small farms
who successfully combine vegetable/fruit/berry operations with animal
operations. I would love to hear from folks on the list who have devised
creative and efficient plant-animal systems.
