I buy bulk onion sets from either of two local feed & seed stores and
plant them for green onions. This year for dry onions, I ordered plants
from Twilley's because they had a good selection of short day and
intermediate day varieties, which is what we need to plant in the south
where summer days are short. (Sorry JSS!)

I think Amy's statement, copied below, is one of the wisest opinions voiced
on this forum to date. It's not good to get sucked into doing something
because its 'the right way' because some guru said so, and its equally bad to
put down idea because it didn't work in your hands, on your farm, in a
particular year, etc. And I know, because I have been guilty of both! The
best part of farming is the experimenting and trading of ideas, the trick is
not to get so attached to an idea that you ignore its negative side. I see
that a lot in farming.

I
I think in many situations, it just depends on your individual situation.
Remember what works for me may not work for you and vice versa. I get so sick
of going to a farming conference and hearing someone say basically "I've
tried that and it doesn't work--- He's full of (compost)!" Keep your mind
open and find what works for you.

We always figure books, workshops, etc are just places for ideas. We have
to look at those ideas in the context of our particular farming situation.
Books and presentations get outdated quickly if the writers/presenters
continue to farm because the people who are asked to speak are also
continuing to fine-tune their farming. Enjoy the ideas, but gauge them by
your own unique situation. It's a big country!

The short answer is no. The long answer is that you could try this, but
you'd probably get a bunch of "rounds" that would just have to be replanted
and/or bulbs so small you'll wonder why you bothered.
