It seems the new organic certifying agency (a spin off of the old NOFA one)
"flunked" a poultry farm because the birds did not have access to the out of
doors. Keep in mind they are following the new USDA rules when inspecting
this farm. The Feds OVERTURNED the denial. As of press time the
Massachusetts agency was deciding how to fight it. So what is the next
organic rules to be overturned and still allow a questionable product to be
organic. Isn't is good that the new rule is better for the consumer :).

So anyway we as local farmers need to know this stuff because one eventually
it makes its way into mainstream press and your customers are going to ask
about it you should simply be able to discuss it knowledgable and two it
helps to give fuel to your local food being worth their while to purchase.

I don't know what kind of entertainment you all enjoy over
the winter, but some of you interested in the organic subject
and its future might benefit from looking into local cases
files of new farm certifications. I have to assume that these
matters are part of the Public Record.

As I said some time ago, in my usual cynical way, the
USDA assumption of the "Organic" label and certifying
process only came about because big ag wants to
co-opt the competitive marketplace.

If the case Beth mentions is real, serious slipping in
the enforcement of regulations is already occurring.

The world wants to hear about it and the press can
always use a helping hand when it comes to factual
case material as opposed to rumor.

Hope you all had a marvelous Turkey Day if you
are in the U.S. For those elsewhere, hope your past
week was enjoyable.
