Does anyone know what happens during the confirming a legal copy of Office on the Microsoft site?

My laptop was reformatted a couple of years ago. It's time to wipe it clean again. I can't locate my original disks for Office.  I don't know if the number that is displayed is my license number of one put on by the vendor.  If I go to the Microsoft site to validate http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/office/WhyValidate.aspx, what happens if the validation fails?   I don't want to set a cascading problem in motion if the license fails. I'd like to buy replacement disks if the number passes.

Any experience you can share?
