I don't have an HDTV but I just recently bought a Phillips DVP5990

The reason I bought it is that this DVD player plays pretty much everything.
You can put a video file on a CD or DVD and it will play it. It also has
a USB port so you can put the movie on a USB stick and it will
play from there too (or a USB hard drive). It works fine with a
standard definition TV and if I ever do upgrade to an HDTV it will
do HD upscaling over HDMI.

So, anyway, that's my recommendation.
