IBM laid off 38 regulars in RTP in November, as well as 100 RTP contractors. Right now the rumor mill suggests that IBM will be announcing layoffs on January 23, perhaps as many as 16,000 world wide.

As far as I can tell its not as bad as in 2001.  Yet.  I don't know anyone personally who's been laid off, and while Nortel laid off another batch, employers like Cisco, SAS, and IBM haven't announced any layoffs as far as I know. I don't know if they're hiring either, which is more to the point for you.  This is probably something best done by gauging the reactions from the bulk of list members.

As long as we're on the subject...I left NC a couple years ago for a mac development job (impossible to find in NC, at least back then) and occasionally I toy with the idea of coming back.

What is the IT job market (esp. for programmers) like in the Triangle right now? Does it mirror the downturn in the other sections of the state's economy?

when there's so many people filing for unemployment the website crashes:

The recession has pushed the jobless rate in North Carolina to 7.9% in November, the last month for which figures are available. That was the highest since October 1983.
