I am a big "whatever works for you" type of guy, but Mail.app doesn't
work for me. Sure, it is pretty, but I'm a mail power user and Mail.app
has a bug with respect to read/unread messages.

I've since made the switch to Thunderbird, and with the right themes and
plugins I've grown to really like it. It is much easier to manage with
respect to subscribing/unsubscribing from mailboxes (not possible with
Mail.app), controlling which folders get checked for new mail, and
properly tuned it is faster (for me) than Mail.app was.

My 2 cents.
