Or you could also go back to html and just tweak Apache or IIS to treat html as shtml.  I would go with this solution instead of the 301 redirect.

There is more to it than that. A site built in 1999 that received 10
backlinks in the year 1999 is given a bigger boost than a site built in 2005
that received 10 backlinks in 2005.  There is a heavy dampening effect
levied on sites whose backlinks are relatively new.
