Web Accessibility Ripples Through IT

A rule requiring federal agencies to make information technology accessible to disabled people should spawn new, affordable products e-businesses can apply to make their Web sites easier to navigate for all their customers.

Among the products affected by section 508 of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998, to take effect this summer, are Web design tools, e-mail software, database servers and keyboards.

As federal agencies begin demanding technology that facilitates access for the disabled, vendors are bundling such features into their core products rather than creating multiple versions, experts said. As a result, it should soon be much less expensive to accommodate the disabled online. Previously, serving that audience--estimated to represent $1 trillion in disposable income--required costly, highly specialized software or heavy redesign work. --L. Scott Tillett
