Hi ibiblio-announce,

1) PHP-5.1.6 is installed in a testing capacity on our development web server. If you'd like to test your code, please do browse to:

http://www-dev.ibiblio.org/yoursite

or, if your site is virtually hosted:

http://www.yourdomain.org.test.ibiblio.org

Many of our sites look fine under PHP5, but we know of several that do not. This may not be the final PHP5 engine that will go into production, so please don't fret if your code breaks under it. As always, drop a note to help AT ibiblio.org with any questions or suggestions.

2) Wordpress 2.0.7 was released this week to address security and bug fixes, and contains a fix for the feedburner problem mentioned on webgroup. If you run Wordpress on ibiblio, please do take a moment to perform this painless upgrade.

3) We're beginning a series of infrastructure version updates, beginning with PHP5 mentioned above, and the MySQL servers we think will be next. We are building a new, more powerful login.ibiblio.org with current software, and are excited about the possibility of new hardware and the improved services we hope to offer. This is all coming down the pipe, one service at a time.

4) Finally, and this is the least pleasant... We have had some security problems resulting from the remote exploitation of out-of-date content management installations. If you have installed phpBB, phpMyAdmin, Wordpress, MediaWiki, or any other such content management system, *please* subscribe to that CMS' announcement list in order to stay aware of new releases and any security problems they may present. We would prefer that phpMyAdmin in particular be protected by an .htaccess file, especially since a large number of users shouldn't be accessing any particular installation. Drop a note to help AT ibiblio.org if you have any questions about upgrading or protecting your CMS installation.

ibiblio is a group effort. We are working to improve the services we offer to you, our contributors, and we ask that you in turn keep us in mind when you set up a new CMS, or more importantly when you decide to cease using that CMS. We're working on a way for us to offer centrally- installed and managed installations of MediaWiki, Wordpress, Lyceum, Joomla, Drupal, and possibly others - but we're not there yet.

We're excited about the things in store for us in 2007. We're starting with the service upgrades mentioned above, and are working on a much broader proposal which would allow us to completely redesign our infrastructure if we can make it happen. Wish us luck! and thank you
for continuing to host your sites with ibiblio.
