I think there's a problem in /usr/bin/osql, with the line defining ODBC_DIR:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Establish ODBC prefix directory

ODBC_DIR=$(strings ${ISQL} | grep ^/ | grep -v elf | grep -v '\.so\.' | head -1 | sed 's/lib$/etc/' )
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I comment out the above in a copy (~/odbc.sh), and add after them what is correct for my server:

ODBC_DIR=/etc

then I get sensible results.

osql -S tnauk -U '<domain login name>' -P'<password>' [-I $HOME]
both give:
osql: error: no potential directory strings in "/usr/bin/isql"
isql strings are:
+ /lib/ld-linux.so.2

isql -v tnauk '<domain login name>''<password>'
logs into the database ok.
