Hello Igor,
I removed the ip address from the log file as it is a production machine and i would prefer not to have its ip address posted on a publicly accessible page which this mailing list is.

so yes the raw log file did have the ip address listed where "[ip address removed]" is.
and i am rather sure it is listening on port 5000 i can telnet into that port and it connects then disconnects with this output:

Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.

so it looks like the port is open.

right then:
1: according the ODBC that does connect to the server the version is
2000.86.3959.00
2. set TDSVER to 8.0 according to this
page(http://www.freetds.org/userguide/freetdsconf.htm#FREETDSCONFPURPOSE
) statement of MSQL 2000 being set to 8.0

3, 4: here is said dump file with the ip address removed for security
reasons.

log.c:190:Starting log file for FreeTDS 0.82
on 2009-01-07 12:16:42 with debug flags 0x4fff.
iconv.c:197:names for ISO-8859-1: ISO-8859-1
iconv.c:197:names for UTF-8: UTF-8
iconv.c:197:names for UCS-2LE: UCS-2LE
iconv.c:197:names for UCS-2BE: UCS-2BE
iconv.c:363:iconv to convert client-side data to the "UTF-8" character
set
iconv.c:516:tds_iconv_info_init: converting "UTF-8"->"UCS-2LE"
iconv.c:516:tds_iconv_info_init: converting "ISO-8859-1"->"UCS-2LE"
net.c:210:Connecting to [ip address removed] port 5000 (TDS version 8.0)
^^^^^^^^
What is this? Are you sure you server listens on port 5000?

again thanks for the assistance.

Thank you.

which leads me to ask the question are there version of SQL server
that freetds cannot connect to?.

No. I don't get to make many categorical declarations, and I thank
you
for the opportunity! ;-)

i set the TDSVER as in the example shown, and tried all the values
listed in the help pages(4.2, 5.0, 7.0, 8.0)
all of which created the same response.

1. State the version of your server.
2. Set TDSVER to the version you think is correct for your server.
3. export TDSDUMP=tdsdump.log
4. Run tsql.

Post tdsdump.log here and let's see what's what.

HTH.
