Follow up to this: I have just tested using the php odbc_connect function
rather than the PEAR DB library, and the query goes through at this point
fine! Weird...

I'll settle for this solution, but if anyone would be interested in helping
further to track down the problem I would be happy to.

This code works from a Windows box using a system DSN odbc connection, so I
presume the connections must be behaving differently.

You have to launch isql/php from same session where you issue the commands.
Or using php you could include environment setting using php like

<?php
putenv("TDSDUMP=/tmp/freetds.log");
?>

(remember to remove it in production environments :) )
