Update: Sybase service on the HP/UX server was restarted, and now it
works.

That's strange: win32 clients worked, HP/UX clients worked, but
neither Sybase's libs+isql on Linux nor FreeTDS+sqsh allowed the
connection. Maybe a packet capture would help figuring out what's
wrong, next time.

The sybase client would say something in the spirit of "invalid packet
length".
