That was it. The renegade line in /etc/hosts was:

127.0.0.1 sandbox

Deleted and connected.

Thanks also to Dave, Brian, and Christopher. The hosts.allow was also
in the way; I found my fingerprints all over the file to allow myself
ftp etc. NetBSD (what I normally use) doesn't install that way.

Now, on to something (perhaps) useful.
