I'd really like to keep the backwards compatibility with Sybase interfaces
files at least since I am using freetds on a machine that does not have a
Sybase open client install, but in a company setting where we have something
like 150 - 200 SQL Servers.

Our DBA group updates the sybase interfaces files centrally and all machines
then nightly synchronize their copies. I'd like to be able to stay part of
that sort of set up, which I'd have trouble doing if the backwards
compatibility were dropped.

Just my 2 cents worth
