Learn to Build Arbors and Raised Beds at Permaculture Park Volunteer Session

This Sunday, November 15 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm staff from Cornell Cooperative Extension will lead a volunteer session in the Permaculture Park to build raised beds and arbors from locally harvested locust wood. The Permaculture Park project is located in Conley Park, a city park on Adams Street in the Northside neighborhood. CCE staff members have been working with neighborhood and community volunteers for the past three years to plant edible trees, bushes and ground covers in the park to demonstrate traditional and unusual fruits and nuts that can be grown in an urban setting. Plantings include apple and plum trees, raspberry, gooseberry, currant and jostaberry bushes, and strawberry and lingonberry groundcover plants.

This Sunday we invite volunteers to help construct raised planters and arbors at each entrance to the park. The raised planters will be used to grow more fruits and vegetables in the park, and the arbors will support edible, ornamental and useful vines such as hardy kiwi, scarlet runner beans and hops. The arbor posts are from locust trees that were harvested just one block from the park! Come support a community project, find out more about growing fruit in downtown Ithaca, and learn how to work with locally harvested locust planks and locust poles. For more information or to RSVP please contact Chrys Gardener at cab69 AT cornell.edu or 272-2292 extension 241.
