Healthy Soils, Healthy Communities

with Gardens 4 Humanity, Cornell Waste Management Institute and Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, and Dilmun Hill Student Farm

 

Date: Saturday, October 23, 2010 

Time: 1PM-4PM

Location: Greater Ithaca Activities Center, 301 N Albany Street. Meet out front. (If raining, follow signs inside GIAC).

Learn about the unique challenges of gardening in urban soils and what you can do to improve the health of your garden and your community. We will discuss testing soils for metals and other properties, including how to collect soil samples, select a laboratory, and understand results. We’ll focus on low-cost actions you can take to address questions about soil health and contaminants so that your garden can provide healthy food and beneficial community green space. Learn how to build and prepare your own raised bed during a hands-on demo!
